Chapter Twenty-Five

It didn’t surprise Lucy that Brynn had broken the house rules and returned to David McCrae’s living room again. No, what surprised her was the sound of voices on the other side of the swinging doors, proof that someone else had found Brynn first.

She drew in a breath and swept through the doors, ready to rescue her employer, and saw not one, not two, but three women clustered around Brynn.

They didn’t look like reporters, but who knew what Ainsley was up to? Brynn hadn’t hired the publicist for this particular tour, but Ainsley considered herself a big-picture person, which gave her license to involve herself in anything that had an effect on Brynn’s career. Lucy wouldn’t put it past her to contact the local media and set up an interview of her own.

“Lucy.” Brynn lifted her hand in a wave, and the light bounced off the sequins on the...festive...sweater Lucy vaguely remembered a book club gifting to Brynn on their first Mistletoe Stop. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” Lucy’s smile expanded to include the women who’d turned toward her. Smiles wreathed their faces. Lucy looked for cell phones or cameras and, when she didn’t see any, relaxed a little. “Ladies.”

“You must be Brynn’s assistant, Lucy.” An attractive woman who reminded Lucy a little of Frozen’s Elsa with her bright blue eyes, porcelain skin and silver braid smiled at Lucy. “Grace mentioned your name in an email she sent the Friends of Frost about the contest. I’m Esther Lowell.” She motioned to her friends. “Darlene and Patricia.”

“Posey,” the woman sitting next to Brynn corrected. She peeled off her cotton candy–pink coat and draped it over the arm of the sofa, an indication she planned to stay awhile. “We’re part of a committee made up of local business owners. There aren’t a lot of us, but what we lack in size we make up for in heart.”

“And creativity,” her friend added.

Grace might have mentioned Lucy’s name, but this was the first time Lucy had heard about a committee.

And why did the word creativity send a shiver of unease down her spine?

“Lucy is the one who keeps my life running smoothly,” Brynn said. “I’m blessed to have an assistant I count as a friend.”

And as her assistant and friend, it was Lucy’s job to rescue Brynn from the impromptu gathering in David McCrae’s private quarters.

Where was their host, anyway?

“David drove off a little while ago,” Brynn said, almost as if she’d read Lucy’s mind. “I’m afraid I’ve made a sizable dent in the woodpile over there, so he might have gone out to cut more.”

“Esther always claims things happen for a reason,” Posey sang. “We wanted to surprise David, and look who ended up being surprised.”

“Us,” Darlene added cheerfully, just in case Lucy hadn’t figured it out.

A quick look at Brynn told Lucy she was handling the situation with her usual grace, but the lavender shadows under her eyes told Lucy she hadn’t slept well.

But then, neither had Lucy.

She’d spent the majority of the night replaying the conversation with Caleb and worrying about Brynn.
